Paralysis: Paraplegia & Quadriplegia

Contact our Memphis spine injury attorneys!

Paraplegia and quadriplegia are lifelong conditions caused by injury to the spinal column. Paralysis can be the result of an on-the-job accident, a car crash, a surgery gone wrong, and more. Paralysis can affect a person’s ability to earn a living and perform daily tasks as they were once able to do. Because paralysis can drastically alter a person’s life, those who were wrongfully injured should seek the financial compensation necessary to cover added expenses.

Types of Paralysis

There are four major types of paralysis:

  • Monoplegia – paralysis that affects just one arm or just one leg
  • Hemiplegia – paralysis that affects an arm and a leg on the same side of the body
  • Paraplegia – paralysis of both legs
  • Quadriplegia – paralysis of both arms and legs

There are varying degrees of each type of paralysis. For example, paralysis can be either total or partial. Partial, also known as “incomplete paralysis,” means that the patient retains some movement and/or sensation in the affected limbs. Total paralysis means the patient has lost all movement and sensation in the affected limbs.

Location of the Injury

The type and degree of paralysis can depend on the location of the spinal injury. There are five main regions of the spinal cord, including:

  • Cervical (C1-C8)
  • Thoracic (T1-T12)
  • Lumbar (L1-L5)
  • Sacral
  • Coccygeal

Talk to your doctor to discern the location and extent of your spinal cord injury.
